The name Matte Equation is deeply personal—a love letter to founder Matthew Celestial’s childhood, family, and fascination with science. Growing up in a family of chemists, science was always in the air. From weekend experiments in the park with his mom to learning about ingredient lists on the back of products, Matthew was immersed in the art and science of how things are made and why they work.

His journey wasn’t linear. After winning an award from the University of Toronto in high school for a research paper on pheromones, skincare and perfume—inspired by his mother’s favourite fragrance—he dreamed of becoming a dermatologist. But life took him on a different path: from studying chemistry in university to working in entertainment PR, all while keeping his love for skincare alive. The vision for Matte Equation eventually brought everything full circle—a brand that balances science-backed skincare with a lifestyle of mindfulness and well-being.

Today, Matte Equation is driven by a mission to help people slow down and reconnect with themselves through skincare. The first product, a mud mask, wasn’t just chosen for its efficacy but for the ritual it inspires: a moment to pause, reflect and reset.
